Walled City – Cafe & Lounge – From A Haveli To a Café

The ever-bustling Purani Dilli is always filled with energy and chaos at the same time. Be it the Karim’s Gali or the Jama Masjid entry not once you can make your way out lanes without brushing shoulders with the by passers. But dont be surprised by this hidden place which will you give you the much-needed solace from all the shor in the city. That’s the Walled City – Cafe & Lounge.

As I walked passed the decaying and dark lanes and made by way inside to a 200-year-old haveli that is now turned into a modern day cafe and lounge, it surely pays its ode to the rich heritage of that era.

Walled City Cafe

Tucked in the narrow lanes of the walled city, this airy café housed in an old mansion is started by café was started by Omaiyer Fehmi, a Delhi University student along with his mother Sheeba Fehmi. Having being told about this place by a friend of mine I got all curious to visit this place.

As I made my way up the stairs, the bright wall art that adorned the place is bound to make heads turn. The Nawab House, is one of the biggest which is now the Walled City Cafe And Lounge. Making myself comfortable in one of the bright turquoise colour chairs as I looked around, it gave me a certain the sense of time travel.

I got lucky to see few kids happily flying colour kites as a flock of pigeons filled the sky. In the words of Sheeba “Most of the original structure has been retained in including the Lakhori bricks or floors”. As you look from the first floor down you get to see an old-style dalaan with lovely artistic marble flooring.

As I siped my shorba and the melodious sound of Azaan calls filled the air from Jama Masjid, and watching the skyline this evening left its mark on me.  Lost in your own world transition this hideaway is perfect when you just want to read THAT book and just be with yourself.

There are tables laid on the open balcony area, there are separate rooms which have been converted into dining areas. As art melts with history, and you flip through the pages of menu, you get to see dishes from Mughal era, along with Continental, Italian and more.

Order whatever pleases your taste bud, rest assured you are gonna love it. Topped with a bit of love from the Fehmi family, your visit will surely become a memory.
