Durga Puja: Maa’s Homecoming

Himer paras lage prane, sharodiyar agomone agamonir khobor peye boner pakhi uthlo geye, ma ashche amader ghore, pujo katuk shobar mon bhore.

As the Kolkata gears for Durga Puja, the biggest festival of the year, one of the most eminent bonedi bari of the city- the Mallick bari is not far from all the celebration and festivities galore. That’s where I belong and one should take my words that every year just those few days before I land up in Kolkata, the craving just not satiates and nothing in the world can compensate for it.

This year marks the 162nd year of our ancestral puja. Like every year I missed it again to get her home but my brothers were to bring HER home. The traditions of the puja have been retained since 1853. Till date we have made sure that our artisans carry forward the tradition generation after generation which is still carried forward by Swapon Pal.

The devi idol comes home on Pratipada day (next day of Mahalaya) and her arrival marks the start of the Devipaksha. The Durga Puja of Mallick Bhawan have believed in maintaining their unique traditional approach. The artisans over the years have made sure the face retains the same charm and glory as it did then. Her Mrinmoyee eyes is something one cant stop having a look at and with the unique Sonar saaje sajono (decorated in real gold) SHE looks more enchanting.

The courtyard of Mallick Bhawan buzzes with hyms  is filled with hymns of spiritual MantrasThese four days pass in a giffy giving all of us a year long wait.
